This logo doesn't give a clue it is about skateboards, but
the font gives a hint that something is a little different about this company,
maybe a bit foreboding. As skateboard fanatics know, Zero is used in more
unusual ways on many of their skateboards, as in Zero or Die. And many other
images are more disturbing yet, but if you're a skateboard fan, it probably
doesn't bother you. As a logo, Zero is a good example of using a font that
conveys something significant, even if the logo itself doesn't tell you what. |

Skateboard logos aren't well known to
non-skateboarders, but that's the way a lot of logos are - instantly
recognizable to those in the know, a mystery to everyone else. At least this
logo includes the skateboard title so you know what sport it is. Perhaps the
swirly graphics represent skateboards in action. No matter, if you're designing
your own skateboard logo, you can put whatever comes to mind. It's up to
everyone else to learn what it means - it's your logo, after all! |

This logo illustrates the way we can be faced with the mystery of
meaning - the words in the logo are familiar but, put together, few would think
of skateboards. But skateboard fans know, and they also know all the logo
implies, which is what a good logo does. When trying to make a logo stand out,
for skateboards or otherwise, don't overlook the technique in this logo. A black
background with sharply contrasting colors draws your eye immediately. The bold
font on the logo also has appeal, and the droplet shape inside brings you back
to the juice theme. Now if someone could just explain what juice has to do with
skateboards...

Here is another logo that will appeal to those in
the know. Few think of needing special shoes to skateboard, but Vans has been
able to capitalize on it, and build a recognizable logo in the process. Other
than a sense of motion, not too much is conveyed by this logo itself, and
nothing brings either shoes or skateboards to mind. But the multiple outlines in
the logo make us think of chrome, and maybe bring in a sense of the hip and the
cool. There are lots of ways to make your logo stand out, whether it relates to
skateboards or not. |
